SEC Proposes Crypto Rules to Clear Path for Token Issuance
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency assets. This is the first major step under the Trump administration to give the industry tailored rules it has long pushed for.
The proposal would exempt certain crypto companies from US securities rules, making it easier for them to issue tokens and raise money. The SEC 'seeks to provide crypto asset entrepreneurs and market participants with clear pathways to raise capital under the federal securities laws,' said Paul Atkins, the SEC's Trump-appointed chair.
Under the proposal, a one-time exemption would be allowed for crypto companies to issue up to $5 million in cryptocurrency tokens during a four-year period. This would also allow offerings of up to $75 million during each 12-month period, with issuers still needing to provide financial statements and meet regular reporting requirements.
The proposal has been praised by industry executives, who see it as a step towards more solid legal footing for the sector. However, some have expressed concerns that without legislation, future administrations may seek to overturn or toughen up the SEC's rules.
