SEC Proposes Exemptions for Crypto Companies to Issue Tokens
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed a new regulatory framework for crypto assets. This move is seen as a major step towards giving the industry tailored rules it has long pushed for.
The SEC's proposal would exempt certain crypto companies and offerings from US securities rules, making it easier for them to issue tokens and raise money. The agency aims to provide clear pathways for crypto entrepreneurs and market participants to raise capital under federal securities laws.
The proposal includes a one-time exemption for crypto companies to issue up to $5 million in crypto tokens during a four-year period. It would also allow offerings of up to $75 million during each 12-month period, with issuers still required to provide financial statements and meet regular reporting requirements.
Crypto industry leaders have praised the proposal, citing it as an important step towards clear, fit-for-purpose rules for digital asset markets in the US. However, some executives worry that without legislation, future administrations may seek to overturn or toughen up the SEC's rules.
