SEC Set to Vote on Groundbreaking Crypto Rulemaking Effort
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is set to vote on August 14, 2026, on its first major crypto rulemaking effort. The proposed regulation, known as Regulation Crypto, aims to provide a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets.
The SEC has scheduled an open meeting for Friday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. ET, with the sole agenda item being whether to publish the proposal and open it for public comment. The commission is expected to green-light this step.
The proposed regulation would give crypto projects a route to raise capital without triggering full securities registration, as well as an exit path out of SEC jurisdiction once a team is no longer actively managing the network. The exact details of the proposal are not yet confirmed, but it is expected to include capped raises for early-stage issuers and a multi-year exemption window.
The proposed regulation is seen as a significant development in the crypto space, as it would provide much-needed clarity and certainty for industry participants. However, it's worth noting that the CLARITY Act, which was introduced to provide regulatory relief for digital assets, is still pending in Congress and may not be passed before the end of 2026.
