SEC Tackles Crypto Rules in Landmark Meeting
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will hold an open meeting on August 14, 2026, to consider new rules for cryptocurrency investment contracts. The proposed rules, known as Regulation or Reg Crypto, aim to provide a clearer and more streamlined path for digital asset projects to raise funds without triggering full securities registration every time.
The SEC Open Meeting will discuss a release proposing new rules under a tailored offering regime, which would give digital asset projects a lighter touch when raising money from US investors. The proposal includes a time-limited startup exemption with modest fundraising caps for early-stage projects and a broader fundraising exemption with higher limits paired with fuller financial disclosures.
The meeting comes as the SEC continues to shape its regulatory approach to digital assets, following years of case-by-case enforcement actions. The proposed rules aim to replace one-off enforcement outcomes with written rulebooks that founders can plan around before token launch. If approved, the next step would be a public comment period, likely lasting 60 to 90 days.
