SEC Warns Crypto Platforms: On-Chain Activity Not Exempt from Securities Laws
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce issued a warning on July 22 that executing cryptocurrency activities on-chain does not exempt platforms from federal securities laws.
In a statement titled 'Headstands and Summervaults,' Peirce emphasized that active vault managers and yield tools can trigger SEC registration and investment adviser requirements.
Vaults, which allow users to deposit crypto assets into smart contracts for lending or staking, have been brought under regulatory oversight. The operational spectrum of these tools ranges from fully programmatic setups to strategies that depend entirely on managerial discretion.
