Sector-Wide Sell-Off Hits Capex-Heavy Operators Amid IREN Writedown
Financial news is being dominated by a sector-wide sell-off in AI data center stocks, triggered by IREN Limited's (NASDAQ: IREN) massive impairment charge of $638.8 million tied to older mining equipment. The writedown resulted in a fiscal 2026 net loss of $702.6 million for IREN, compared to an $86.9 million profit the previous year.
The sector-wide selloff has hit capex-heavy operators particularly hard, with Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) dropping 7% to $25.55, TeraWulf (NASDAQ: WULF) falling 7% to $15.39, and Core Scientific (NASDAQ: CORZ) declining 7% to $16.39.
While the Global X Data Center and Digital Infrastructure ETF (NASDAQ: DTCR) fell only 1% to $28.17, valuations are amplifying the move, with IREN carrying a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 137x and Applied Digital sitting at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 526x.
Management's confidence in IREN's pivot from Bitcoin mining toward AI compute services remains unwavering, with contracts targeting $4 billion of annualized revenue by year end. The company closed the year with $7.62 billion in cash and equivalents, a significant cushion against further potential writedowns.
