Sei Network's Giga Upgrade Targets Record-Breaking Throughput
Sei Network is pushing its blockchain limits with the Giga upgrade, aiming to hit 200,000 transactions per second (TPS) with finality under 400 milliseconds. This is a significant leap from the current throughput of 5,000 to 12,500 TPS. The Giga project involves rebuilding the blockchain from scratch and consists of three main components: Autobahn for consensus, Ares for execution, and Eidos for storage.
The new consensus layer, Autobahn, is a multi-proposer protocol that allows several validators to propose blocks simultaneously, reducing the bottleneck created by sequential processing. This, combined with asynchronous execution, enables Sei Network to achieve high throughput without compromising finality. The team has already demonstrated 5 gigagas of computational throughput and TPS above 200,000 in an internal devnet.
The first phase of Giga was rolled out through the v6.6 mainnet upgrade in August 2026, introducing Ares as the default execution client and starting the phased rollout of Eidos. The new storage system separates EVM state from other chain data, reducing I/O competition and improving performance. Sei Labs has not set a fixed completion date for Giga, but is rolling out each component in phases while tracking progress publicly.
