Self-Custody Fears Hold Back Bitcoin Developer's Accumulation Plans
German Bitcoin developer René Pickhardt revealed on August 6 that his concerns about self-custody security and key management held him back from accumulating more BTC, despite believing in its upside potential.
Pickhardt's comments came after a recent Coldcard hardware wallet incident raised questions about the generation of private keys. Security research linked vulnerable firmware to predictable seed phrases, which can expose users to remote key recovery attacks.
According to Galaxy Research, an estimated 1,755 BTC was stolen across several attack waves related to vulnerable wallets. Coinkite acknowledged the firmware problem and released patched software but warned that installing new firmware does not repair a seed created under vulnerable conditions.
Pickhardt's admission drew attention because his technical familiarity with Bitcoin did not eliminate his custody concerns. He emphasized that even correctly generated private keys face risks involving storage, implementation mistakes, and future advances in computing.
