Self-Custody Fears Keep Developer From Accumulating More Bitcoin
Bitcoin developer René Pickhardt has shared that his fears about self-custody security and key management prevented him from accumulating more Bitcoin, despite his conviction in the asset's potential.
Pickhardt stated that 'security & key management always freaked me out,' which he framed as a risk-management decision rather than a criticism of Bitcoin.
The comments come after a recent Coldcard hardware wallet incident raised concerns about how self-custody tools generate private keys. The issue involved randomness used when generating wallet seeds, potentially allowing attackers to reconstruct private keys without physically possessing the device.
Galaxy Research estimated that approximately 1,755 BTC had been stolen across several attack waves linked to vulnerable wallets.
