Self-Custody Proves Resilience as Bitcoin Sees Massive Movement After Coldcard Exploit
Casa's CEO Nick Neuman highlighted the resilience of Bitcoin as an asset class after the recent Coldcard firmware exploit. The attack led to the theft of approximately 2.1k BTC, but onchain data shows that 22k BTC moved to exchanges and 233k BTC left long-term holder wallets in on-chain transactions.
The data, provided by Checkonchain, suggests that holders shifted funds from non-Coldcard single-key setups to multisig wallets after reassessing the risk. This movement is seen as a testament to the strength of self-custody and its ability to limit the impact of such attacks.
Neuman contrasted this outcome with a hypothetical centralized custodian breach, arguing that in such a scenario, the numbers would likely reverse, and most funds would be lost. He emphasized that self-custody benefits not only individual holders but also the Bitcoin network by distributing risk and preserving confidence.
