Self-Custody Still Outperforms Centralized Custody: Bitcoin Developer
Peter Todd, an early Bitcoin developer, is defending self-custody as the strongest protection for long-term BTC holders. He argues that a recent Coldcard firmware vulnerability, which allowed attackers to steal approximately $88 million in BTC, does not weaken the case for personal custody solutions.
Todd points out that centralized platforms continue to expose users to larger systemic risks than individual hardware wallet failures. He highlights exchange collapses such as QuadrigaCX, where losses exceeded $200 million, as proof that giving private keys to third parties remains a major security risk.
The developer believes the biggest challenge for self-custody is not Bitcoin's technology but human error. He argues that securely managing a recovery phrase is a practical skill that users can learn with proper education and preparation, comparing it to protecting passports or other essential documents.
