Senate Advances Clarity Act, Paving Way for Crypto Regulation

US Senate Majority Leader John Thune has moved to advance the Clarity Act, a landmark bill aimed at creating a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The move is seen as a crucial step towards passing the bill, which would provide legal clarity for the crypto industry and potentially boost adoption of digital tokens.

The legislation, if passed, would define when digital tokens are securities or commodities and which regulators oversee them. This would be a major victory for US President Donald Trump, who has prioritized crypto reform during his second administration. Trump has already signed a bill supporting dollar-backed tokens known as stablecoins into law last year.

The passage of the Clarity Act is seen as a blow to banks, which have fought to limit language that would allow crypto companies to effectively compete for bank deposits by offering rewards on customer stablecoin holdings. Democrats want more restrictions on government officials' crypto ventures, and negotiations on this aspect of the bill remain fluid.

Trump has reported over $1.4 billion in income from his family's crypto ventures last year, which has raised concerns about conflict of interest. The crypto industry itself has spent over $119 million backing pro-crypto candidates in the 2024 election hoping to advance the Clarity Act and stablecoin law.
