Senate Advances Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Amid Democratic Opposition
US Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed to advance the Crypto Clarity Act, a legislation that aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The move could pave the way for a full Senate vote on the bill when it returns from its August recess in mid-September.
The legislation currently needs the support of at least eight Democrats in addition to all voting Republicans in the Senate. However, Democratic opposition remains a significant obstacle, with lawmakers seeking additional safeguards and restrictions related to cryptocurrency activities by government officials.
The Clarity Act would set out rules for determining when digital tokens should be classified as securities or commodities and clarify the responsibilities of federal regulators. Crypto companies have pushed for the legislation, arguing that clearer rules would reduce regulatory uncertainty and encourage wider adoption of digital assets.
