Senate Blocks Clarity Act in Blow to Crypto Regulation Efforts
The US Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act, which aimed to establish a federal framework for crypto markets. The bill, sponsored by Senator Cynthia Lummis, would have clarified the roles of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in regulating cryptocurrencies.
The Senate voted 49-50 against cloture on the motion to proceed with the legislation, which is a procedural step towards considering the bill. This means that the Clarity Act will not move forward for now.
The bill's supporters, including Senator Lummis and several Republicans, had made significant concessions in an effort to gain Democratic support. However, Democrats remained unsatisfied with the revised language, particularly regarding stablecoin rewards and ethics restrictions covering President Donald Trump's crypto interests.
