Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Concerns Over Trump Involvement
A major setback for the cryptocurrency industry occurred on Tuesday when a regulatory bill failed to advance on the Senate floor. The Clarity Act, which aimed to establish a framework for the crypto market, was blocked by all Democrats and a few Republicans in a procedural vote. The motion to proceed with consideration of the bill fell short of the required 60-vote threshold, with a 49-50 vote.
The opposition from some Republicans may have been unexpected, as four Senators - Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Jerry Moran, and Thom Tillis - voted against the measure. The industry had long pushed for this legislation to provide clarity on regulations.
Despite last-minute efforts to reach a deal between Republicans and crypto-friendly Democrats, the bill ultimately failed due to lingering concerns about President Trump's involvement in the crypto industry. About a dozen Democrats were considered potential yes votes but declined after failing to agree on ethics rules.
