Senate Clarity Act Delay Clouds 2024 Federal Crypto Framework Prospects
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act's path to becoming law has hit another roadblock. Senate Majority Leader John announced that no procedural vote on the bill will occur before the August recess, which reduces its momentum this month.
This delay may have actually helped the bill by avoiding an immediate failure, but it also dims its prospects for becoming law in 2024. The bill's passage odds remain uncertain due to bipartisan support faltering and disagreements over key issues such as ethics concerns linked to President Donald Trump's crypto business ties, law enforcement provisions, agriculture-related matters, and stablecoin yield and rewards.
Supporters of the legislation are still pressing ahead, but views on its chances are divided. Senator Angela Alsobrook says getting the Clarity Act right remains the goal, while some Republicans have started voicing concerns over the bill's provisions. A Senate staffer notes that a legitimate deal is needed to secure Democratic votes, and negotiations continue as the Senate heads into recess.
