Senate Democrats Block Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Over Trump Ethics Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked a cryptocurrency regulation bill, citing concerns over President Donald Trump's potential financial interests. The CLARITY Act, which has been backed by crypto interests and passed the House more than a year ago, aims to establish a framework for regulating cryptocurrencies and integrating them with the existing U.S. financial system.
The bill fell 11 votes short of breaking a filibuster, with Senate Democrats voting against it primarily due to the lack of provisions to rein in Trump's crypto interests. Republican Senators Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, and Jerry Moran also voted against the measure, while Thom Tillis voted against it for parliamentary reasons.
Democrats demanded strict rules that would prevent Trump and other high-ranking federal officials from profiting from their own personal cryptocurrency business ventures while holding office. Any covered federal official would have to divest from those holdings or place them into a blind trust, according to Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
