Senate Democrats Block Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Over Trump Ethics Concerns
US Senate Democrats blocked a bill aimed at creating a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency on Tuesday. The 49-50 vote was a pivotal test for the $2.3 trillion crypto market, which has been pushing aggressively for uniform rules.
The legislation, known as the Clarity Act, would have given the industry more legal certainty and protected consumers by establishing a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements. However, Democrats demanded stronger ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from cryptocurrency investments while in office.
Trump agreed to some concessions on ethics, including new restrictions on federal elected officials issuing digital assets like the presidential meme coins he launched before his second term. However, these concessions were not enough for Democrats, who said the latest Republican proposal did not have enough enforcement.
Democrats sent a counteroffer that would expand the ethics provision but were unable to reach a final deal. The Senate needed 60 votes to move forward on the bill, and Republicans fell short without Democratic support.
