Senate Democrats Hold Emergency Meeting Ahead of CLARITY Act Vote
The CLARITY Act is facing an emergency meeting with Senate Democrats ahead of its procedural vote on September 15. The move comes as pressure mounts on the bill, which aims to establish a new market structure for cryptocurrencies in the US.
According to reports, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for a caucus meeting to discuss the bill, which will take place just two days before the procedural vote. The Democrats have been working on amendments to the bill for months, but several key issues remain unresolved, including ethics rules for senior government officials.
The proposed ethics provision would bar the US President and Vice President from issuing or promoting certain crypto tokens, as well as limit the number of spouses they could have. However, this rule does not apply to children of officials, which has sparked controversy given the involvement of Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump's company, World Liberty Financial, in crypto endeavors.
The Republicans are hopeful that Democrats will come on board with the bill, but several key senators, including Thom Tillis and Rand Paul, have expressed concerns about the current proposal. If the CLARITY Act fails to pass the cloture vote, it could be delayed until 2030, according to Senator Cynthia Lummis.
