Senate Faces Two-Week Deadline to Pass CLARITY Act Amidst Ethics Dispute
The Senate has only two weeks to pass the CLARITY Act before its August recess, according to Grayscale Investments. The firm warned that if the bill does not clear the Senate in this timeframe, it will likely be overshadowed by midterm election politics.
The legislation aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for U.S. digital asset markets, dividing oversight between the SEC and CFTC. Supporters argue that defined jurisdiction, registration standards, disclosure rules, and customer safeguards offer greater stability than enforcement actions or agency guidance alone.
However, an ethics dispute is currently the main obstacle to bipartisan agreement. Republican language imposes limits on public officials who issue or sponsor digital assets during office, while Democrats favor stronger restrictions and enforcement mechanisms.
