Senate Returns for Final Legislative Sprint Ahead of Midterms
The US Senate has returned from its five-week recess to tackle several pressing issues before the midterms. One of the top priorities is cryptocurrency legislation, specifically the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets. The bill is set to undergo a procedural vote on Tuesday, but it's uncertain whether it will gather the necessary 60 votes.
The Senate is also expected to focus on a college sports bill, known as the Protect College Sports Act, which seeks to regulate name, image, and likeness rights, as well as transfer eligibility. Despite bipartisan backing from the Big Ten and SEC, some lawmakers and advocacy groups have expressed concerns, citing the lack of meaningful input from Black athletes, coaches, and HBCUs.
Additionally, the Senate may take action on reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expired in June. This comes after a bipartisan deal to extend the surveillance authority was disrupted by President Trump's selection for Director of National Intelligence.
