Senate Seeks Stopgap Spending Bill Before Recess Deadline
Senate Republicans are racing to pass a stopgap spending bill before Friday's recess deadline in order to prevent a government shutdown. The continuing resolution would extend current funding levels through early December, giving Congress time to negotiate full-year appropriations.
The House of Representatives already passed a comparable version in mid-July that would extend funding through December 4. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has made passage of the measure a top priority before lawmakers scatter for the August recess. With current federal funding authority set to expire on September 30, the clock is ticking.
The stopgap bill doesn't address any crypto-related issues, but government shutdowns create regulatory uncertainty that affects financial markets broadly. During previous shutdowns, agencies like the SEC and CFTC have operated with skeleton crews, leading to delayed enforcement actions and stalled rulemaking. This creates an underappreciated problem for crypto regulation.
