Senate Set to Vote on Landmark Crypto Legislation
The US Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on whether to advance the Clarity Act, landmark cryptocurrency legislation that has been met with mixed reactions from lawmakers and industry stakeholders.
The bill aims to create a regulatory framework for digital assets, which crypto companies say would provide them with more legal certainty. However, it remains unclear if the legislation can garner the 60 votes needed to advance, despite efforts by Senate Republicans to address concerns from the banking industry and some Democrats.
The Clarity Act has been broadly supported by the crypto industry, but investors and analysts have said that the market had mostly priced in a bill not being passed into law in the foreseeable future. Passage of the legislation would reduce legal uncertainty and could unlock additional institutional activity, according to Can-Luca Köymen, investment strategist at digital asset bank Sygnum.
The bill has been a subject of controversy, with Democrats pushing for stricter limits on public officeholders profiting off their own crypto ventures. The new text of the bill gives state attorneys general more power to enforce restrictions on public officeholders and requires political officials to divest any existing significant financial interests in crypto-focused companies or place those assets in a blind trust.
