Senate Vote Looms for Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Despite Opposition
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the Clarity Act, is a 600-page bill aiming to create a clear set of rules for the cryptocurrency industry in the US. The Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote on Tuesday, which will determine whether the bill can move forward.
One of the main goals of the Clarity Act is to divide responsibility for the crypto market between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC would get most of the regulatory power under the proposal, which has raised concerns among critics that it could lead to less strict oversight.
Critics argue that giving the CFTC greater control could allow crypto companies to face less regulation. However, proponents of the bill say this is not the case and that the CFTC would still maintain a strong regulatory framework.
Another point of contention is the ethics provision in the bill. Democrats are worried about conflicts of interest involving politicians and have argued that the ethics protections are too weak. They also question whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) would act as a strong check on a sitting president, given Trump's own crypto businesses.
