Senate Vote Looms Over Crypto Regulatory Framework Bill
The US Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a landmark bill aimed at establishing a federal regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry. The bill, spanning over 600 pages, would split regulatory oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Proponents argue that clear rules are urgently required to protect millions of consumers currently investing in unmonitored digital assets. Ryan VanGrack, vice chair of Coinbase, said 'Tens of millions of Americans are investing in products that don't have clear regulatory oversight... That's an abomination.'
Oppoents and consumer advocates argue that shifting key oversight to the smaller CFTC weakens regulatory enforcement and leaves severe loopholes. Senate Banking Committee ranking member Elizabeth Warren announced plans to criticize the measure's updated ethics provisions on the Senate floor ahead of the vote.
