Senate Vote on CLARITY Act Looms as Crypto Industry Holds Breath
The U.S. crypto industry is bracing for its biggest legislative test yet on September 15, when the Senate will hold a crucial procedural vote on the CLARITY Act.
Coinbase Global Inc.'s (NASDAQ:COIN) policy chief Faryar Shirzad remains cautiously optimistic about the bill's chances of advancing. He notes that the industry has spent years building enough bipartisan support to get comprehensive crypto regulation within reach.
The CLARITY Act aims to provide a clear framework for regulating the crypto market, addressing concerns around DeFi provisions and exchange rules. However, Shirzad expects several remaining disputes, including ethics language involving President Trump's crypto interests, to be resolved before the vote.
If the bill fails to pass, regulators would attempt to implement over 100 rules, replicating much of the framework Congress failed to enact. Despite this, Shirzad believes that crypto will continue to move deeper into traditional finance through tokenization, stablecoins, perpetual futures, and 24/7 markets.
