Senate Votes on Cryptocurrency Regulation Amid Trump Investment Concerns

The US Senate is set to vote on a bill that aims to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, but Democrats are pushing back due to concerns over President Donald Trump's investments in the industry.

A top priority for the crypto industry, the legislation has been years in the making and could give companies like Coinbase more legal certainty. However, many Democrats have expressed opposition to the bill unless it includes stronger ethics safeguards to prevent the president and his family from profiting off their investments while in office.

Trump has amassed significant wealth in the crypto sector since his re-election, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial, a crypto firm co-founded with his special envoy Steve Witkoff. The legislation currently does not include provisions that would require Trump to put his crypto holdings in a blind trust or divest when they reach a certain value.

A proposal by Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina had sought to require such measures, but it remains unclear if the two sides will be able to agree before the vote.
