Sensex Plunges 2200 Points Amid CAS Liquidity Concerns
The Indian Sensex experienced an extreme swing during the BSE's new Closing Auction Session (CAS) on August 27, plunging by over 2,200 points before recovering nearly 2,000 points within minutes. The index fell from around 77,200 to approximately 74,983, sparking concerns about liquidity and prompting scrutiny from SEBI.
Market participants attributed the sharp move to thin BSE liquidity, which may have amplified the swing. This has raised questions about expiry-day liquidity and whether the new closing system is creating additional risks.
Although SEBI claims it will not make any changes to the CAS, the surprise swing has left traders in a dilemma over its implications for market-impact and regulation risk signals relevant to crypto markets, centralized and decentralized exchange (CEX/DEX) liquidity, DeFi security, and token adoption.
