SharpLink CEO Warns EIP-8363 Threatens Ethereum's Competitive Edge

SharpLink CEO Joseph Chalom has voiced strong opposition to Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 8363, which aims to cap the amount of ETH staked by gradually increasing the portion of consensus-layer rewards that are burned as the staking ratio rises. The proposal would reach a full 100% burn and thus zero issuance yield once roughly 50% of the ETH supply is staked.

According to Chalom, EIP-8363 would undermine decentralized finance (DeFi) and erase one of Ethereum's key advantages over Bitcoin. He argues that staking yield currently functions as the de facto base rate for on-chain markets, supporting liquid staking tokens, lending protocols, and capital deployment.

Chalom also claims that Ethereum's issuance is attractive to institutions because ETH is 'natively productive.' SharpLink, which holds and deploys significant ETH across validators and DeFi protocols, has formally opposed the proposal.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov has also expressed concerns about EIP-8363, warning it would make yields unpredictable and weaken demand for ETH as a productive asset. The proposal's introduction has been criticized for coming at a moment when Ethereum's institutional momentum is growing, with the launch of the Ethereum Institutional non-profit and EthSystems.
