Sheriffs Association Shifts Stance on CLARITY Act, Clears Path for Senate Vote
The National Sheriffs Association (NSA) has shifted its stance on the CLARITY Act, moving from opposed to neutral. This change comes after a letter was sent to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer by Sheriff Troy Wellman and Justin Smith, the NSA's president and executive director/CEO respectively. The bill in question is H.R. 3633, also known as the CLARITY Act.
The NSA had raised objections to the bill since July 2026, citing concerns over anti-money laundering compliance and law enforcement access to blockchain transaction data. However, the association's letter stated that it would step back and allow the legislative process to continue, without endorsing the bill.
This shift in position may provide a clearer path forward for the Senate to pass the CLARITY Act, which has been a topic of debate among lawmakers. The House already passed its version of the bill by a wide bipartisan margin, but it still needs 60 votes to succeed in the Senate. A cloture vote is scheduled for September 15, 2026.
