SHIB Burn Mechanism Fails to Create Meaningful Scarcity Amid Massive Supply
Shiba Inu's massive supply of 1 quadrillion tokens has led to a burn mechanism that feels more symbolic than significant, despite removing 41% of its original supply. As of late July 2026, approximately 410.84 trillion SHIB has been burned, but the remaining circulating supply sits near 589.24 trillion tokens.
The token's starting supply was fixed to attract retail buyers with extremely low unit prices in August 2020. Half of that supply, 505 trillion SHIB, was sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin as an unsolicited gift. In May 2021, Buterin donated 50 trillion SHIB to the India COVID-Crypto Relief Fund and then sent 410 trillion of his remaining balance to an Ethereum address with no known private key.
The burn mechanism works by sending tokens to a dead wallet, an address with no known private key, so anything sent there cannot be recovered or moved again. The process currently comes from manual and voluntary burns, automated burns tied to Shibarium, and occasional large one-off burns from whales or community campaigns.
