SHIB Marks Six Years Since Launch with Record-Breaking Milestones
The SHIB token celebrated its six year anniversary on August 1, 2026. Launched by Ryoshi in August 2020 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with about $3,000 in liquidity, it reached a peak market cap north of $37 billion and absorbed the largest token burn in history.
SHIB's creator, Ryoshi, minted 1 quadrillion tokens and locked half in a Uniswap pool. The other half was sent to Vitalik Buterin's wallet, giving him control over nearly half of the total supply. This move aimed to prevent insider dumping on the community.
In May 2021, Buterin donated roughly 50 trillion SHIB to the India COVID-Crypto Relief Fund and burned a further 410.24 trillion SHIB, valued at around $6.7 billion. This burn is still the largest in crypto history.
SHIB's price peaked near $0.00008845 in October 2021 before correcting hard through 2022. Despite trading roughly 95% below its 2021 high, the token has continued to develop and grow its ecosystem.
The team launched Shibarium, an Ethereum Layer-2, on August 16, 2023, which processed over 1.5 billion cumulative transactions. However, the network was briefly paused due to a bridge hack in September 2025, where an attacker drained about $2.4 million from the bridge.
