Shiba Inu Exchanges See Massive Open Interest Decline Amid Market Weakness
According to recent data, eight out of ten Shiba Inu (SHIB) exchanges have seen a decline in open interest. Open interest is a measure of the value of open positions in derivatives that have not yet been closed.
Declining open interest can initially seem like a bearish sign for SHIB, but it may actually be a bullish indicator. This is because reduced leverage can decrease one of the main risks affecting SHIB's price in the current market structure.
The value of open positions decreased on several exchanges, including OKX (3.37%), KuCoin (11.31%), Gate (2.02%), Bitget (2.12%), and MEXC (4.08%). dYdX was marginally negative, while LBank and WhiteBIT also saw contractions.
However, Bitunix and HTX were the only exchanges that showed increases in open interest. Trading volume on several exchanges declined even more quickly than OI, with KuCoin's SHIB derivatives volume decreasing by nearly 70%, Bitget by 41%, and MEXC by roughly 34%.
This suggests that speculative activity has significantly decreased, which could benefit SHIB. Highly leveraged markets are susceptible to liquidation cascades, where long positions are liquidated by a slight price decline, forcing the price lower.
