Shiba Inu Takes Early Lead in Japanese Crypto ETF Race

Japan's recent decision to reclassify cryptocurrencies as financial instruments under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act has created an opportunity for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the country.

The National Diet approved the legislation on July 15, 2026, with the government promulgating it as Law No. 64 on July 23. This change lays the groundwork for separate taxation and potential fund listings on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is positioning itself to be an early beneficiary of this regulatory shift. The meme coin has already built a notable presence in Japan's licensed exchange ecosystem, with nine member exchanges handling SHIB as of September 1, according to the JVCEA's official list.

The Green List designation, which identifies crypto assets that meet four conditions, including trading history and no special conditions imposed by the association, has given SHIB a 'head start' in the ETF race. However, regulatory implementation is still pending, with analysts anticipating the earliest listings could arrive around 2027.
