Shipyard Winds Down Operations Amid Protocol Labs Funding Cut

Protocol Labs' decision to end funding for Shipyard has led to the collective's decision to wind down its operations by September 30. This move will leave several popular IPFS projects without dedicated maintainers, including Kubo, Helia, Boxo, Rainbow, IPFS Desktop, and IPFS Companion.

IPFS is an open-source protocol for storing and sharing data across peer-to-peer networks, created by Protocol Labs along with Filecoin. Shipyard was established in 2024 as an independent collective of longtime IPFS developers who previously worked at Protocol Labs.

Molly Mackinlay, the engineering and research lead at Protocol Labs, stated that IPFS would shift to 'lighter-weight stewardship' through IPFS Foundation grants to individual maintainers. This means development will continue on decentralized public infrastructure, but without dedicated stewardship from Shipyard.
