Short Covering Fades: Bitcoin Rally Loses Steam Amid Macro Risks
Bitcoin's latest price surge may be losing steam as short covering fades and macro risks linger. According to QCP Research, the current rally is partly driven by short covering rather than fresh leveraged positions. Open interest has decreased as Bitcoin's value increased, while strong spot ETF inflows have provided additional demand.
The firm noted that ETF inflows are nearing the 95th percentile of the past year, indicating strengthening spot demand. However, QCP warned that the rally could become more fragile if short covering loses momentum and new demand does not replace it.
Strategy, a company that raised over $1.9 billion without adding Bitcoin to its holdings, built a $1.59 billion flexible cash reserve, bringing its total dollar assets to $6.69 billion. This suggests liquidity management rather than immediate accumulation.
Broader macroeconomic signals have added uncertainty to the market, with minutes from the July Federal Open Market Committee meeting showing a 9-3 vote for a rate hike. The upcoming appearance of Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement to double long-term Treasury buybacks may also impact markets.
