Short Squeeze Frenzy May Rewrite Bitcoin's Liquidity Script
A surge in short positions across American stocks is sending shockwaves through financial markets, and experts say it could reshape Bitcoin's (BTC) role as a liquidity destination.
Rising US equity short interest reflects hedging rather than outright bearish bets, according to research firm CryptoQuant. Hedge fund gross leverage has climbed to nearly 293%, alongside record short exposure on the S&P 500 and elevated days-to-cover readings.
XWIN Japan, a contributor to CryptoQuant, argues that Bitcoin could shift from a tech-correlated asset toward a separate liquidity destination if conditions ease. The firm notes that the asset has historically tracked equities during panics, but this relationship began to shift in 2025.
XWIN sees Bitcoin turning into a hybrid asset, still tied to macro liquidity yet more capable of moving on its own. If future conditions bring Fed easing, a weaker dollar, and renewed ETF inflows, XWIN wrote that Bitcoin could become 'a secondary liquidity destination rather than simply a correlated tech-like asset.'
However, network activity has cooled sharply, with active addresses down nearly 40% in two weeks. Analyst Ali Martinez flagged that thinning activity during sideways trading usually means short-term speculators are stepping aside while longer-term holders keep their supply.
