Singapore Man Pleads Guilty to Massive Cryptocurrency Heist

A young Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to participating in a massive cryptocurrency heist worth $245 million. Malone Lam, who is in his 20s, was accused of conspiring with an online group to steal 4,100 Bitcoin from a victim living in Washington D.C. in August 2024.

The group deceived the victim into giving them access to their Google Cloud and Gemini accounts by claiming there was an unauthorized access attempt. Lam used the stolen funds to rent a luxury Miami house, buy about 30 luxury vehicles including Lamborghini and Ferrari, and spend $569,000 at a Los Angeles nightclub in one night.

The FBI arrested Lam in September 2024, a month after the crime. He could face up to 30 years in prison depending on the outcome of his trial. The U.S. Department of Justice is determined to crack down on cybercrime and hold perpetrators accountable.
