Singaporean Man Convicted of Masterminding $245 Million Crypto Theft Ring
Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean, has been convicted of masterminding a massive cryptocurrency theft ring that stole over $245 million. The gang, which consisted mainly of young individuals from California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, and overseas, used online gaming platforms to meet and assign specific responsibilities to its members.
The group included database hackers who obtained cryptocurrency-related databases from websites and servers or purchased them on the Dark Web. They also identified potential victims through social media and crypto community forums. Co-conspirators would then contact the victims posing as security specialists, using psychological manipulation to obtain their passwords, private keys, and seed phrases.
The stolen funds were laundered using various methods, including mixers, exchanges, peel chains, pass-through wallets, and virtual private networks (VPNs). In one instance, a gang member burglarized the home of a victim to steal a portable hard drive containing their cryptocurrency wallet. The money laundering process was 'infinitely more complicated' than the thefts themselves.
The case came to an end after the gang spent extravagantly on private jets, luxury cars, diamond jewelry, and watches in August 2024. This led to their arrest in September of that year. Lam continued to direct his gang's efforts from prison and even used stolen funds to pay for his attorneys.
