Singaporean Man Pleads Guilty to Leading $245 Million Crypto Theft Ring

A Singaporean man, Malone Lam, has pleaded guilty to leading a group that stole $245 million in cryptocurrency. The theft was carried out using social engineering techniques, including impersonating officials from Google and Gemini to trick victims into divulging access credentials.

The largest theft involved over 4,100 Bitcoin, which was stolen through telephone calls to the victim's home in August 2024. Lam spent lavishly on nightclubs, with estimates suggesting he spent up to $500,000 per night, and purchased more than 30 cars.

His associate Veer Chetal gave a Lamborghini to his parents and stored a duffel bag containing $500,000 in cash in their laundry machine. The group's activities were so brazen that even Lam's initial court appearance sparked a comparison with the title character in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Lam is the 11th member of the group to plead guilty, and sentencing guidelines recommend a prison term of at least 14 years upon conviction. Two money launderers involved in the operation have been sentenced to roughly six years in prison.
