Singaporean National Pleads Guilty to $245M Crypto Theft Conspiracy

Share

A Singaporean national has pleaded guilty in US federal court to participating in a racketeering conspiracy that relied on social engineering and physical break-ins to steal over $245 million in cryptocurrency. Malone Lam, accused of helping build and run an international operation, entered the plea before US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to one count of participating in a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege that the enterprise operated from October 2023 through at least May 2025. Lam's guilty plea adds clarity on how prosecutors believe the operation functioned, including organizing targets, coordinating co-conspirators, and using online gaming platform connections.

The case expanded to include more than $263 million in alleged thefts after a superseding indictment added 12 defendants. Prosecutors claim that stolen funds were used for high-end purchases, including private jets, rental properties, watches, and exotic cars, as well as nightlife expenses reaching up to $500,000 per evening.

The plea underscores how social engineering attacks can be paired with operational coordination and money movement infrastructure, making them more resilient than a single compromise event. The DOJ's narrative connects account takeover techniques directly to the longer-term laundering pipeline.
