SK Hynix Slumps Despite Record Earnings as HBM4 Delays Bite
SK Hynix, a South Korean memory giant, released its Q2 2026 earnings report, which showed a staggering 557% increase in operating profit to 60.5 trillion won. Despite this impressive growth, investors punished the company's shares by dumping them nearly 10%, with a closing price drop of 9.6% on July 29, 2026.
The missed estimates were primarily due to slower-than-expected shipments of high-bandwidth memory (HBM4) chips, which are crucial for AI infrastructure builders. The revenue recognition delay was not because of weak demand but rather a supply chain issue.
For crypto investors, this news matters as HBM chips power GPU and accelerator systems that drive AI model training and high-performance computing workloads. If shipments don't accelerate, it could signal bottlenecks in the broader AI infrastructure buildout.
However, SK Hynix management sees this as a timing issue rather than a demand problem, based on their long-term supply agreements with major clients and massive capex commitment of approximately 50% higher than the previous year. The company has also bolstered its balance sheet with a net cash position of 88 trillion won.
