Small U.S. Government Bitcoin Transfer Reignites $25.5B Custody Debate

The U.S. government's handling of seized cryptocurrency assets is once again under scrutiny, this time due to a small transfer of approximately $377 worth of Bitcoin from Alameda Research's Binance.US accounts nearly three years ago.

Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence flagged the transaction, which highlights the ambiguity surrounding what happens to Bitcoin once it's in government hands. According to Arkham, no exchange deposit tied to a sale was identified, and nothing in their report suggested the coins were headed toward liquidation.

The transfer is small compared to larger movements of seized Alameda funds earlier this year, which totaled nearly $984,000 and landed at Coinbase Prime for the FTX estate. These transactions involved multiple digital assets recovered from wallets tied to both FTX and Alameda, not just Bitcoin.

The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, created by President Donald Trump's executive order in March 2025, holds forfeited Bitcoin under a strict no-sale policy, separate from assets still tied up in legal proceedings. However, basic custody questions remain unsettled, with officials still examining whether the Treasury Department has sufficient legal authority to hold and manage seized Bitcoin.
