Smaller Crypto Issuers Struggle in Winner-Takes-Most Market
Hashdex, a Brazil-based asset manager, is shutting down its U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF (NYSE Arca: DEFI) due to lack of assets under management and trading liquidity.
The fund, launched in 2024 after converting an existing Bitcoin futures ETF, failed to attract meaningful investor assets, despite briefly reaching $17.5 million in assets.
With approximately $14.7 million in assets and about 225 BTC at the end of July, Hashdex cited various factors for the decision, including assets under management, trading liquidity, operating costs, investor demand, and its place within its broader product lineup.
The closure highlights the competitive nature of the crypto ETF market, where larger issuers with deep distribution networks, lower fees, stronger liquidity, and familiar brands dominate, making it difficult for smaller competitors to compete.
