Smashed Diamond NFT Defies Logic, Sells for Whopping $43,000
Tascha Labs, an angel investor and macroeconomist, sparked controversy in 2021 when she announced her plan to buy a $5,000 diamond, create an NFT of it, then smash it to pieces.
The stunt aimed to prove that digital footprints can retain value even if the physical object is destroyed. However, the move was widely criticized by those outside the cryptocurrency and NFT circles.
In a surprising twist, the destroyed diamond NFT ended up selling for 11 ETH ($43,000) in October 2025, nearly triple its initial price of $1,898.45. This is despite a decline in real-world diamond prices over the same period.
The NFT's value increase has led to questions about whether Tascha Labs' hypothesis was correct. While she initially claimed that the experiment proved her theory, it seems that the success of the destroyed diamond NFT can be attributed more to luck and its viral idea rather than any underlying logic.
