Social Security Benefits Get Slightly Smaller Boost as Inflation Projections Shift

The Social Security Administration has revised its estimate for next year's cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), projecting a 3.6% increase in benefits for retirees. This is slightly below the earlier forecast of 3.8%, but still represents a significant boost to household incomes. The COLA will be based on the average Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) reading from July, August, and September compared to the same period last year.

The Senior Citizens League estimates that the 3.6% increase would translate to a monthly benefit of roughly $1,938 rising by about $70, bringing the payment slightly above $2,007. The maximum benefit for someone retiring at age 70 in 2026 after earning the taxable maximum throughout their career can receive as much as $5,181 per month.

However, it's essential to note that maximum benefits depend on wage-indexing and the year benefits begin, not just the COLA. The final COLA will be announced by the Social Security Administration on October 14 after September inflation data are released.
