Solana Activates Second Wave of Rent Reduction, Unlocking 612K SOL
Solana has activated its second wave of rent reduction on mainnet around September 11, 2026. This move drops the per-byte deposit requirement from 6,333 lamports down to 5,080, making up to 612,000 SOL available for users to reclaim.
The rent reduction is part of Solana's five-part plan to slash account storage costs by 90%. The network will reach its final target of 696 lamports per byte by November 2026. However, each subsequent activation depends on the Solana core team monitoring state growth and ensuring that cheaper storage costs don't cause the blockchain's data footprint to balloon uncontrollably.
When users' accounts hold more lamports than needed due to a lower deposit requirement, the excess becomes reclaimable. Solana provides a dedicated instruction called WithdrawExcessLamports that allows account holders to pull out just the surplus without disrupting anything.
