Solana Activates Transaction V1, Paving Way for Faster Finality with Alpenglow Upgrade
Solana's Transaction V1 is set to activate on September 9, doubling the maximum size of a single transaction from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes. This upgrade will allow developers more room to pack instructions and data into a single transaction, making it easier to handle complex operations like zero-knowledge proofs and cross-chain transactions.
The increase in transaction size was chosen partly because four kilobytes matches a common memory-page size on validator hardware. Legacy and version-zero transactions will remain compatible with the new format, while developers who want to use the larger format will need updated SDKs.
Solana's next major upgrade is Alpenglow, which will replace the current TowerBFT consensus design and target transaction finality of about 150 milliseconds. This change carries more risk as it alters Solana's consensus system, but faster finality could strengthen the network if the upgrade works reliably at scale.
