Solana Agave 4.2: Major Upgrades to Boost Network Performance
Solana's Agave 4.2 upgrade is set to significantly boost the network's performance and efficiency in 2026.
The release includes several key upgrades, including reducing slot times from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds, effectively doubling the speed of confirmations.
This change will be implemented gradually over four 50ms steps, allowing network performance to be monitored during rollout. If block skip rates become too high, the network can pause the rollout.
Another major change is an increase in maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, giving developers more than three times as much space for complex operations such as ZK proofs and large multi-signature transactions.
The upgrade also includes a planned 90% reduction in rent costs, which will be phased in over five steps. The target is 696 lamports per byte, down from 6,960. Lower rent could make applications with large numbers of accounts cheaper to operate.
