Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Delayed to October with New Consensus Mechanism

The Solana Foundation has announced that the Alpenglow upgrade will not be activated in August 2026 as previously rumored. Instead, it will arrive with the Agave 4.3 release, which is targeted for October 2026, but does not have a fixed date or block height.

For SOL holders, this means no action is required at present. However, there is one important change that has already been implemented since July 22, 2026: validators' BLS public keys are now live. This affects delegators more than wallet owners, as it may have cost them their entire staking yield without any error message.

Alpenglow replaces the current TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a new voting algorithm called Votor. The metric at stake is finality, the period after which transactions can no longer be reversed in practice. Solana's Foundation aims to reduce finality from 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.

The upgrade will also introduce Rotor, a successor to Turbine, which breaks blocks into redundant fragments for improved network resilience. Votor is designed to reach consensus even if 20% of the stake acts maliciously and another 20% is offline.
